We choose magnificent locations, gorgeous accommodation and stay for 3 -5 days in each location rather than engage in a frenetic succession of buses, airports and whistle stops. Thirdly we cherish a dangerous idea: that the essence of India resides in the stories and lives of its people. Guides and translators facilitate respectful conversations with Indian people, not just the tour guide, from all walks of life: Bhopa Gypsies and Bhill tribal people in Rajasthan; Sufi priests and boatmen in Varanasi; third gender Hijra communities.
